Float
1st visit – safe under the arcade
Cold, drizzly morning today, after dropping off m’lady at the airport, spent under the protective roof and elaborate arches of Pasadena’s Burlington Arcade, sipping a Handsome Roasters cappuccino and a warm, freshly baked cheddar and chive scone made by the folks at Float. Good way to start (or continue) a morning.
A too-short stop today at Single Origin, brought on by their tweet-out that they were serving up their Verve exclusive, El Salvador La Cuestona López.
One mach, a one-n-fun, and a cap. Not all for me.
Tasting notes from around the table… dark chocolate (capp) … celery (mach) … some sort of tropical punch thing (esp) … butterscotch candy (mach)1.
Nicely presented as well. Thanks!

Upon saying this, my table-mates, mouths agape, and eyes wide, said, “did you say ‘butt-scratch candy’?!” A good laugh was had by all. Later, at Sur la Table, via a demo unit operated by a well-meaning salesperson, we actually were served an espresso that had notes of butt-scratch candy. So it was just foreshadowing. ↩

The Sprudge folks on “the El Bulli of coffee”, Theorem:
Theorem’s two-man barista crew prepared for us what they call an “enhanced espresso”, wherein a mixture of filtered water, blueberries, clove, and vanilla were heated and allowed to macerate together in a Hario TCA-5 siphon pot. The mixture was then poured into the handle of Mypressi Twist, then used to pull a shot of the Worka and served in a tall shot glass.
I want to go to there.
Update: Going. Saturday, September 22nd, 1:45 PM. If anyone wishes to join us, please, feel free. Theoretically, there may still be four seats left…
Fix. Awesome neighborhood spot in Echo Park. All about the outdoor space.
Stellar cup of Intellientsia’s Debello Ethiopia off the V60: creamy body, lemon candy.
The coffee:
a macchiato with Verve’s Guatemala Bola De Oro — chocolaty and sweet.
A cup of Finca La Rosa’s Honduras from Verve — Like a dark chocolate bar” she said.
Our first visit to SO in The Grove was punctuated by serendipitous (re)discovery…
LA’s scrumptious little bakery, Short Cake, is right here, at SO, baked goods literally being produced directly behind the SO staff in what amounts to an outdoor operation. How do they get the crusts on those perfect little apple pies so flaky in that heat?
SO is a Verve account. And a good one. I have that on authority. Trust me.
Damn if every time I meet an employee of Verve, they’re not some the nicest people in the coffee biz.

Handsome Coffee Roasters. “Scout’s Honor”. An espresso blend that is apparently on its way out, being replaced by “Comeuppance”.
